The Great and Powerful Dr. Oz
On a steamy Sunday in early August, at an hour known as church-time across certain swaths of the U.S., the famed heart surgeon and health guru, Dr. Mehmet Oz, strutted about a stage at the Javits Convention Center, preaching his own kind of gospel. He was speaking to an audience made up mostly of women—middle-aged types with wide waists, heaving hearts, and the look of worship on their faces. Many of them had seen him on The Oprah Winfrey Show, the dashing doctor in the sky-blue scrubs, and like latter-day pilgrims they had driven from New Jersey, Rochester, even Chicago just to attend his workshop, “It's All About You: Be the World Expert on Your Body." They weren't disappointed. As he launched into a parable about the ravages of heart disease—a horror scenario that he narrated with the help of two JumboTrons and an animation of a giant, atherosclerotic artery—it was clear that he had achieved an extraordinary feat, even by medical standards: he had managed to wrap Deepak Chopra, Dr.

Caregiving can draw families closer
I recently visited my family in Chicago. The trip was not a scheduled vacation or family reunion, but rather a trip planned to support my parents as my father went through chemotherapy. His cancer is non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and was caught at an early stage. At 78 years of age my father is a serious reader, a fan of opera as well as a fan of all things architecturally unique. He loves Frank Lloyd Wright and has visited many of his designs that have been built across the country. As the oldest son in our family, I knew that I needed to make this visit. I needed to provide some relief for my brother and two sisters who still live in the area, and I needed to be part of the family experience as my father worked through the six rounds of chemotherapy that his doctors had planned for him.
Surviving in a safety helmet, the little boy with half a skull
Like any three-year-old, Tom Trueman is constantly at risk of taking a tumble. But in his case every fall could prove fatal - which is why he wears a safety helmet every waking moment. Tom, who has already had ten operations, had half of his skull removed after a hospital infection attacked most of the bones in his head. He has astounded doctors with his progress since but, as his everwatchful parents know, a knock from a fall or a glancing blow from a stray football could cause permanent brain damage or prove fatal. Pampering that spares no expense
Massage therapist Erin Salisch has spent six years taking mental notes on what type of spa she would like to create for herself and her clients. Now she's put her ideas into practice with the opening of Estancia Day Spa & Salon in the Montecito Plaza at Willow and Nees avenues in Fresno. Along with her husband, Ryan, the Salisches have transformed 3,200 square feet of commercial space into the region's latest full-service spa and salon. While the couple are well aware they join an increasing number of competitors, including established operator Zena's Island Day Spa and nearby newcomer Escape Day Spa owned by Amber Frey, they believe they've created a business with enough personal touches to build a loyal following. "I know there are spas popping up everywhere," Erin Salisch said. "But we have created something that people will really appreciate."The Salisches have seemingly spared no expense and attention to detail including, thick, hand-crafted alderwood doors with metal and glass detailing, walnut-brown stained textured concrete floors, plastered walls and an indoor water fountain.
If Wells goes, who will take his place?
STAFF WRITER August 7, 2007 ST. LOUIS – The Padres are discussing the status of starting pitcher David Wells, whose position is in jeopardy. Two other starting pitchers apparently are recovered from injuries. Chris Young, who is on the disabled list because of an oblique strain, reported no setbacks after a 20-minute mound session, and he remains likely to start Thursday against the Cardinals, according to manager Bud Black. "He came out of it good," Black said. Right-hander Justin Germano, who departed Sunday's game after being hit in the right thumb, also will be available to start on normal rest. One potential candidate to replace Wells would be Clay Hensley, but Hensley, who was sent to Triple-A on Sunday, cannot be recalled for another eight days unless another Padres player goes on the disabled list.
