We'll be ready

CRAIG GORDON today assured supporters that Hearts will be fit and ready for the start of the SPL campaign after rubbishing reports of unrest over training methods. The Tynecastle skipper was speaking out after it was claimed he was unhappy with the standard of pre-season training at their camps in Germany and Austria.

It had been suggested that the 24-year-old did not believe the training methods used by Eduard Malofeev - who is in Germany with the squad as advisor to the board on football matters - were satisfactory and that he believed the squad were behind in terms of fitness.

Residents pressure board to open bridge

Tempers flared and frustrations were high after nearly 60 people showed to vent last week about the progress -- or lack thereof -- in regard to Black's Bridge in Crafton.

With more than $100,000 already spent by the borough for plans, studies and emergency repairs, residents and business owners alike want a solution immediately.

In addition to cut-through traffic getting lost and major headaches for motorists, Crafton Boulevard businesses including Back in Style Antiques and Capretti & Company hair salon have suffered.

McCulloch helps Rangers hang tough

IT MAY not actually have been 271 years since the Lowlanders from Ibrox got a result at Inverness, but, to a substantial number of disgruntled Rangers supporters, it will have felt like it. Through last season's miserable series of jousts, yielding two defeats and a draw, it seemed that the Highlanders were still holding a grudge over Culloden.

Pushing the right button gets results

Anne McGuire and I never talked on the phone about her problem with Rogers Home Phone. We communicated only by email.

But once I helped her push the right buttons at head office, she had what she wanted within two days. That's more progress than she made after six weeks of calling on her own.

McGuire's story is more hair-raising than most. She lost her treasured phone number of 19 years when she moved to a condo in late May.

Rogers mistakenly disconnected her phone before the scheduled date. Then, it assigned her old number to the family that moved into her home.

Frustrated with fruitless calls to an interactive voice response system, McGuire sent me an email saying: "This is an S.O.S. for H.E.L.P."

Email is a great tool.

Mogul's empire surpassed television

Merv Griffin, a veteran talk show host who created an empire of entertainment businesses, most notably as producer of the long-running game shows "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!," died of prostate cancer yesterday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 82.

Griffin was one of the most unlikely but enduring show-business figures of his generation. A serviceable baritone who had a novelty hit with "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts," he parlayed his chatty personality and astute business sense into almost unparalleled TV success.
